Babycakes cupcakes (Melbourne) *(closed)

The little-mentioned but oh-so-irresistible, Babycakes. Cupcakes. Need we say more?

Our experience

Down the escalator to David Jones’ Food Hall, the disintinctive warm aroma of freshly baked cookies hits you. Further inside, there is an expensive fruit grocer, gourmet delicatessen, and a series of stalls offering salad, antipasto, sushi, oysters and champagne even, and hot and fast lunch food of paninis, pizza and pies. DJs Food Hall may not be the spectacular cavern that is London’s Harrods Food Hall, but on Wednesdays to Fridays, it has long had something that Harrods doesn’t have. The little-mentioned but oh-so-irresistible, Babycakes. Cupcakes. Need we say more?

Here we have a selection to entice you to visit and sample ($3.80 each for the regular size; also available as mini Babycakes). Babycakes usually only caters for special functions, weddings and corporates etc, so their pop-up is very special. Our long-time favourite is the Choc Fudge Cupcake, an excruciatingly moist mud cake with an exquisite swirl of chocolate cream, crowned with a small latticed chocolate decoration. This is from Babycakes’ signature range, available all year round, thank you very much.

This is the Lemon Delicious Cupcake – a buttery pound cake, subtly flavoured with lemon, with a inner surprise of creamy lemon curd (MoMo & Coco’s favourite preserve), and topped with thick iced frosting and flakes of coconut for a tropical touch. This rather English classic irresistible is also available all year round.

If you love lemon curd as much as MoMo & Coco does, you might also love passionfruit curd. This is the Passiona Cupcake, with another inner surprise of passionfruit curd, passionfruit everything, and dusted with sparkling sugar. Also available year round.

Another favourite of ours from Babycakes’ signature year-round range is the perfect one for the not-very-sweet-tooth, the plain-but-goodey, Very Vanilla Cupcake. A classic pound cake, with sweetness conferred by a spread of childhood-evoking pink icing sugar frosting. Ornamented with a sugar jasmine flower. Wouldn’t this irresistible look simply divine in a pyramid cupcake stand for a garden party?

As most good places do, Babycakes captures the seasons in its creations. Please note MoMo & Coco were not careful carting these irresistibles home (that’s Melbourne’s sardined trains for you), so please do not take any icing damage as representative of Babycakes. From the annual autumn range, we have the Figgy Pudding Cupcake – a dense almond and ginger base with a strong scent of butterscotch, beautified with lightly-flavoured, soft fig buttercream and crested with a sweet shard of crunchy praline.

Also from the autumn range, this is the unique Rhuby Red Cupcake. This cupcake is a lightly spiced cake with a smiley face of rhubarb that is guaranteed to blow away the autumn chills, complemented by a frosting of cream cheese swirled with cinnamon and embellished with a cute pink maple sugar leaf.

Get your scarves and gloves on, and hurry in for the perfect cupcake for winter, the manly Lumberjack Cupcake from the annual winter range. Super moist, poignantly flavoured with apple, saturated with dates, adorned with a curl of brown sugar buttercream and honeyed apple wafer, this is one of MoMo & Coco’s seasonal favourites.

Our verdict

Although the philosophy of this journal-blog is to photograph and describe only, it is MoMo & Coco’s good opinion that alongside Little Cupcakes, the other finest outlet for cupcakes in Melbourne is Babycakes. Babycakes may not offer an extensive flavour range, but with what it does offer, one may be assured of consistency — always moist flavoursome cupcakes, with just the right amount of flavoursome, rather than merely sugary or buttery icing. For the friendliest service delivered by a chirpy young representative, MoMo & Coco would recommend visiting on Fridays, but hasten and be prepared to joustle, because these irresistibles from Babycakes are popular with the suits and little old twin-set pearl ladies, and tend to sell out by lunchtime. Babycakes, please remain MoMo & Coco’s little irresistible pop-up secret….
