The Hallyu Dessert Wave: Bungeoppang at Shingane (NYC)

Hunting down an elusive Korean street food dessert.

Our experience

As we previewed in our Mid-Year NYC Dessert Trends News update, if 2022 was the year that saw the emergence of South-East Asian specialty dessert spots, this year of 2023 may just be the year that ushers in a similar East Asian wave.  During the rare weekends when we don’t have work hanging like a cloud over our heads, you will typically find us aimlessly window shopping between food outings.  And sometimes, towards the late afternoon, we tend to crave a little something sweet, something savoury to top-up our energy reserves. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, we highly recommend checking out Shingane – it’s perfectly located between Soho and Flatiron, two of our favourite shopping districts. 🙂

Newly opened just a month or two ago at the start of summer, Shingane specializes in made-to-order bungeoppang ($6), renamed as “goddess buns” here.  If you have never had bungeoppang before, it is similar to the Japanese taiyaki or Taiwanese wheel cake.  At Shingane, it’s reshaped as a giant disc, skewered like a lollypop, and embossed with iconic Manhattan scenes.  The flavours available include chocolate nuts, red bean and a cheese bungeoppang, of which we love the latter two the most. The cheese especially has this addictive stretchy texture and slightly salted edge.

If it’s available on the day of your visit, don’t miss the misugaru drink or the tteokbokki, either.
