Introduction
Can you believe that we have reached our 7th year in NYC? 😦 As some of you might know, we regularly update our “best NYC desserts” round-up review. However, when we do so, email subscribers don’t receive an email notification. 😦 Only those who follow us on Instagram will be alerted of each update. So, for those who don’t follow us on Instagram, we will post an update every few months on what has been updated.
Recently updated round-up reviews:
Best bubble tea desserts: We added a few new places where you can find bubble tea soft serve ice cream and big pints of ice cream, and there’s also a new spot for bubble tea tarts that are not sweet at all. Updated review: Here.
Best cream puffs: If you love tiny cream puffs, with an Asian-esque sensibility, check out a new East Village spot specializing in these tiny treats. Updated review: Here.
Best doughnuts: We added an ultra creative doughnut purveyor to the list, as well as one that focuses on boozy doughnuts. Updated review: Here.
Best mochi doughnuts: From just one pon de ring mochi doughnut a few years ago, we now count five stores in Manhattan now offering it! Updated review: Here.
Best pandan desserts: We tracked down two more wonderful pandan chiffon cakes, one giant bundt-style made by our favourite Malaysian/Singaporean dessert spot, and another by an elusive Vietnamese dessert pop-up. That pop-up also offers a squishy pandan honeycomb cake that should not be missed. Updated review: Here.
Best shaved ice: After spending the first two months of this year hibernating indoors and bingeing on Kdramas, we can’t wait to hit up all the bingsu shaved ice spots again this summer. We added a newcomer to the list. Updated review: Here.
Best s’mores desserts: Who doesn’t want more s’mores? We added a giant smores’ cream puff, another giant s’mores slice, and a mini s’mores tart to this long list. Updated review: Here.
Best Trader Joe desserts: TJs has upped the ante on its dessert offerings – we highlight a few new ice cream flavours, and some memorable seasonal desserts that you should look out for. Updated review: Here.

Other new dessert news:
Recent restaurant dessert favourite: After 2.5 years of barely any memorable restaurant dining because of the pandemic, we went a little crazy in the last year! 😀 And we can say that the dessert game in NYC is picking back up in the city’s restaurants! We especially love Kyu, Momoya Soho, and Tan. And look out for more upcoming restaurant dessert reviews.
Latest Western dessert trend: Ah NYC, why are you so so fickle!! Two flower cake stores took NYC by storm earlier this year, albeit fleetingly, and the city’s ADHD-like attention span then very quickly reverted to croissants rolled into a circle, cube, and square.
Latest Asian dessert trend: Much to our delight, the growth of Asian dessert specialty spots continues in NYC — if pre-pandemic saw the predominance of modern Japanese desserts, 2021-2022 was all about South East Asian desserts. So far this year, we note the strengthening wave of modern Korean desserts, and a nascent emergence of modern Chinese desserts. See e.g., here and here. We will be publishing a few special reviews soon.
Dessert adventures abroad: We wrote a little about recent trips to Iceland, London and the desserts there. Are you inspired to travel for desserts like us? 🙂
