A dose of extra sunshine for those NYC summer days.
Our experience
After over four years of living in NYC, your Dessert Correspondents are of the opinion that the NYC ferry routes have to be one of the city’s best kept “secrets.” A thousand times more scenic (and cleaner) than the miserable Hades that is NYC’s putrefying subway system, you can use the ferry routes to sail to Astoria for a buffet of Greek food, to Williamsburg for a hit of hipster festivities, Rockaway Beach for your dose of Vitamin D, and our personal favourite, Red Hook. We could walk over to Red Hook from our Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill neighbourhood in about 45 minutes, but when NYC ices your bones in the winter or turns you into a human ice cream in the summer, the ferry is an uncontroversial alternative. We have previously told you about the wonderful chocolate factory, Raaka. Today, we share the wonders of Steve’s Key Lime Pies.

Steve’s Key Lime Pies is a window in a wall. You walk up to said window, and you try to decide what to order. You could choose the Instagram favourite “swingle” – a key lime pie dipped into chocolate. It reminds us of a childhood biscuit called “Wagon Wheels,” albeit where biscuit has been replaced by key lime custard here. We however, always choose the classical mini key lime pie. Measuring 4 inches in diameter, the Graham biscuit crust is finely milled, a beautiful nut brown colour and infused with buttery tones. The key lime custard component zings with flavour – we love its particularly tart tones!

After you have paid, trot over to the picnic tables or stroll over to the adjacent park that has a 180 degrees view of a silvery river from which the Statue of Liberty emerges like the hilt of Excalibur. Et voila – this is how a perfect weekend afternoon is made. Our pro-tip though, is to take the little pie home as an edible souvenir of your dessert adventure to Red Hook, incubate it in the freeze for a little moment, and then have it chilled…with a side of sorbet or ice cream 😛
