#Covidessert – Supermoon Bakehouse (NYC)

The ultimate dessert-for-breakfast self-care package.

Our experience

This coming week will be the ninth week of #Covidquarantine in NYC.  Can you believe that almost half a year has gone by?  Time flies, yet also time crawls.  Ambulance sirens do not careen through all the hours of the day anymore here in NYC, yet the shrill cries of incompetent politicians increasingly do.  Aside from the human loss, perhaps the other tragedy is the sheer loss of intelligence in the leadership ranks (especially here in the U.S.).  In the U.S. where the unemployment figure now amounts to more than the entire population of our home country, Australia, those fortunate enough to remain employed during this time have the privilege to consider “self-care.”  With the greatest humility as to how fortunate we are, over this month, we will be resuming our dessert adventures in a different fashion, partaking in some food delivery and sharing our thoughts on the most indulgent edible “self-care” to be had.

The first that we are showcasing here is the dessert care package from Supermoon Bakehouse.   If you hop onto their website at 6pm every Monday, you can get a beautiful box of 9 pastries delivered to your residential address for the upcoming weekend for just under $50.  Depending on your house size, it will either serve you just for that weekend, or in our case, a pastry a day keeps the doctor away, right? 😛

The menu changes weekly, but generally, one can expect to have an assortment of traditional breakfast pastries, as well as sweeter dessert-pastries.  You can’t pick and choose, you simply receive the entire box.  The bakery does provide you with a list of the ingredients though, which is helpful for those with allergies and/or food sensitivities.  We were particularly thankful that our box had no peanuts.

  • Croissant – super buttery, but perfectly flakey
  • Pain au Chocolat – an explosion of chocolate creme the moment you bite into it
  • Fruit Danish – embedded with apricot, glazed with honey and cardamom
  • Bear Claw – similar we think to an apple turnover, with a heart of apple pie and almond cream
  • Cinnamon Scroll – made more indulgent by being swirled with cookies and cream
  • Croissant Toast – made of twice-baked croissant dough, embellished with bananas, almond cream, cinnamon and crumble, this was far heavier than your average breakfast French Toast
  • Cookie – studded with macadamia nuts and white chocolate, we would love to see one with milk chocolate
  • Choux Ball – say hello high tea at home, this little cute snowman was all luscious vanilla and hazelnut
  • Doughnut – engorged with passionfruit curd, this was our absolute favourite of the box!

We would be remiss to not mention that before #Covid, Supermoon Bakehouse was known as being one of the most creative bakeries in the city.  Located on the border of the East Village and Lower East Side, its holographic rainbow boxes and open display of pastries caught the fanfare attention of the millennial crowd early on.  We have featured its soft-serve ice cream in our ice-cream reviews previously, but we also remember it for some truly crazy pastry creations, including and especially its “Banana Split Sundae Twice Baked Croissant,” “Lychee Jam Doughnut,” and its many multi-coloured croissants.  Below are some pics from past visits there, do consider a visit once the lockdown is over!

Our verdict

Those in New York have long lived with the virus known as #FOMO.  It’s arguably, just as contagious and just as dangerous as the current virus called #Covid.  It certainly exhausted us physically, mentally and financially.  And yet strangely, the #FOMO virus also sometimes had a euphoric effect.  When we heard that Supermoon Bakehouse was offering boxed desserts, your Dessert Correspondents succumbed to the #FOMO virus.  The greatest irony is that the #FOMO virus was the perfect antidote to the anxiety caused the by #Covid virus.  In short, don’t miss out on Supermoon Bakehouse’s dessert “self-care” package.
