Introduction
It is probably an understatement to say that we have eaten a lot of desserts. And sometimes, we admittedly get a little bored with desserts. For example, don’t talk to us about croissants. We shall never understand NYC’s infatuation with it… By contrast, when dessert chefs get more creative with desserts, you can bet that we will be first in line! Here’s a tour of the cutest — and unquestionably, very Instagrammable — desserts one can find in Melbourne’s CBD – can you catch them all? 😀
Jiggly cat pudding from Blackball
Dessert destination: Blackball, 206 Bourke Street, Melbourne CBD.
Budget: $$.
Short and sweet story: Blink and you will miss it, that’s how we feel about Blackball’s semi-hidden Chinatown location. But don’t miss it, or you will have major regrets! Blackball has created a dreamy box of Chinese desserts that is absolutely perfect to share with a group of friends. A jiggly soybean cat-shaped pudding shakes up a picturesque assortment of modern and traditional Chinese desserts including croffles, silky tofu pudding, tangy citrus-y bingfen, red bean soup and egg custard pudding.

Character macarons from Dreami
Dessert destination: Dreami, 525 Little Collins Street, Melbourne CBD.
Budget: $.
Short and sweet story: Ten years ago when we first established this dessert review blog, macarons were $2.50 a piece. Ten years later…. 😦 In any case, we opened our wallets when we saw Dreami’s character macarons. Erring on the crunchy rather than airy side of the macaron texture spectrum, Dreami’s macarons are available in a range of characters, from Hello Kity, Pokemon, Minions, etc, and also in the traditional twin disc sandwich format. They certainly pull at the inner child heartstrings 😀

Rabbit muffins and dog croissants from Butter Room
Dessert destination: Butter Room, 16 Katherine Place, Melbourne CBD.
Budget: $-$$.
Short and sweet story: How does one resist a dessert shop that unabashedly wears its heart on its signage? We definitely couldn’t, and over multiple visits, Butter Room has become one of our most favourite Asian dessert cafes in Melbourne. We make it a point to always order the Butter Room’s exquisitely tanned onion-shaped garlic bun on each visit, and also one of the sweeter creations, such as a cookie-croissant hybrid imprinted with a sweet canine face and a dense brownie-like matcha muffin embellished with a thick scoop of cream shaped like a rabbit.

Character bao from Son in Law
Dessert destination: Son in Law, Melbourne Central Shopping Centre precinct, Melboune CBD.
Budget: $-$$.
Short and sweet story: Before visiting Son-in-law, these Dessert Correspondents think that the most unique bao shape we have come across in the past was probably… a bao resembling a pumpkin or a peach? Bravo then to Son-in-law for reimagining the bao into different shapes, sizes, colours and characters! Priced much higher than your average white bao in a Chinatown bakery, the baos at Son-in-Law are available in both savoury and slightly sweet flavours. Be warned that if you take away, make sure to reheat in a steamer or microwave for a bit otherwise they may bit somewhat dry and hard…

Rabbit mousse cake from Sulwha
Dessert destination: Sulwha, 374A Little Collins Street, Melbourne CBD.
Budget: $$.
Short and sweet story: We have nibbled through a lot of mousse cakes over the years, from Melbourne to London to NYC and elsewhere. From those painted over with a starry galaxy glaze, to those shaped like a trompe-l’oeil fruit, one can be fairly imaginative with crafting mousse cakes. Outside of the Melbourne CBD, we love the character mousse cakes from Linger Cafe, and inside the CBD, the only place where we have spotted character mousse cakes has been at Sulwha. Here, there’s a either a bear or a rabbit mousse cake. The rabbit is simply adorable, blushing in cherry blossom pink, and possessing an inner heart of chocolate and raspberry.
