Following the cardamom trail.
What are the best things to do if you only have a whirlwind 48 hours in Copenhagen? Don’t fear, two days is quite sufficient to get a good taste for the city. In this guide, we list the top sights to check out in Copenhagen and we also take you on a tour of the best Danish bakeries (yes, all those cardamom buns and cube pastries!) to try in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro District.
The Ultimate 48-hour Itinerary in Copenhagen
The First 24 hours
In the first 24 hours, you can easily fit in the following:
- Join the crowds at the (little) Little Mermaid Statue,
- Hopscotch from one castle to another (Rosenborg, Amalienborg, Christiansborg),
- Browze the Nordic decor and jewellery stores lining Stroget,
- Ascend the spiralling Round Tower for brilliant city views,
- Stop for lunch at the buzzing Torvehallerne Food Hall,
- Embark on a cruise from the iconic Nyhavn Canal area,
- Catch the last sun rays filtering through the glass atrium of the neo-classical Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum, including contemplating twilight with a Rodin sculpture in the adjacent rose garden,
- End the day gazing at the twinkling lights and fireworks over at Tivoli Gardens, a curious Orientalist theme park relic from another era.
If you have the budget and more time to plan your trip, we recommend advance booking one of the world renowned Michelin-starred restaurants in the city too.

The Second 24 Hours
In the next 24 hours in Copenhagen, do as we did and follow the scent of cardamom across several bakeries in Nørrebro, a district situated to the north-west of the historic centre. Below is a map of the bakeries that we hit up, and a gallery collage of the treats that we couldn’t finish on our bakery crawl, so we instead hand-carried them back on the flight to NYC. 😀 NYC may have a smattering of Nordic-inspired bakeries popping up (see here), but nothing beats tracking down the original sources of inspiration in Copenhagen.
- Leckerbaer
- Mirabelle
- Bageriet Benji
- Andersen & Maillard
- Rondo
- Collective Bakery
- Juno
- Meyers Bageri

Dessert adventure checklist
Dessert destination: Copenhagen.
Budget: $$.
Sweet irresistibles: Bakery treats. Our favourite bakery in Copenhagan is probably Benji for the cardamom buns, and Andersen for the creative-shaped pastries.
Travel notes:
- How long? We spent 48 hours in Copenhagen, one day to catch the sights and the other day to eat all the best Danish bakery treats 🙂
- When to visit? We travelled in late August, at the end of summer. The weather was cool, hovering at 15-20 degrees Celsius.
- How to get there? Copenhagen is easily accessible. We flew from London. From the airport, it was an easy 30 minute train ride to the city centre, and no crazy stairs to navigate.
- Where to stay? We stayed at the slightly eccentric Citizen M Hotel, and the more traditional Ascot Hotel. They are both centrally located.
